RADIO host Nick Ferrari launched a furious rant on council employees salaries, referring specifically to Slough, Wirral and Birmingham, after a report revealed 608 council employees earn packages exceeding the Prime Minister’s salary.

Nick Ferrari lashed out at council employees’ salaries, following a report which claimed nearly 2,500 council employees received pay packages worth more than £100,000 last year. The LBC radio host listed the salaries of employees in Slough, Wirral and Birmingham, the top three councils with the biggest pay packages for executives. Mr Ferrari rampaged: “Probably one of the most hard pressed people in the public sector right now is the Prime Minister. I know you are all going to talk about consultants working for the NHS, I get it, I get it, I get it.

“But if you just take on as the political aspect, £150,400 gets you the salary of the Prime Minister, keep that figure in your mind.

“£150,400 is what Theresa May earns and by God I reckon she does earn it, whatever you think of her and whatever you think of how she’s prosecuted Brexit she’s certainly put in her shift.

“So why doesn’t she go and become the interim chief executive of Slough? £595,000 to run Slough. What the hell is happening in Slough?

“I mean you may as well play Premier League football this bloke. Just get Wayne Rooney to do it, it’s incredible. That’s a Roger Parkin by the way.

“Well he’s the interim chief executive, interim, I mean what’s the man or woman who gets the gig going to get?

“Anybody in the Wirral? Well if you’re the managing director of delivery, what does that mean? Not literally delivery is it, of your bins? £569,000.

“To Birmingham Paul Dransfield, Director of major programmes, well presumably he was promoted from minor programmes, £444,000.”

Local authorities defended the pay packages and stressed that salary was only part of the total, which also included redundancy and pension payments.

Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA) figures showed 2,454 council employees had pay packages higher than £100,000 in 2017-18 and 608 council employees earned more than £150,000.

A total of 28 council employees received pay packages higher than £250,000 in 2017-18.

Slough Borough Council topped the TPA list of “highest remunerated” bosses, with interim chief executive Robert Parkin receiving a payment of £595,077 before leaving the position in December 2017.

A spokesman for Slough Council told Express.co.uk: “We do not comment on individual cases as they are confidential.

“However these figures have been presented completely out of context. These figures don’t just involve almost a full year’s salary, but also pension contributions and redundancy payments all of which, in Slough’s case, are only what is contractually and statutorily mandated. This interim chief executive left the council in December 2017.”

A Wirral Council spokesman told Express.co.uk: “The Council does not recognise the larger figure highlighted by the Tax Payers’ Alliance.

“As a result of a restructure last year a senior member of staff left with a combination of severance payment, cost to the council of pension contributions, and salary owed which was approved by the Employment and Appointments Committee.”

A spokesman for Birmingham Council told Express.co.uk: “The TPA figures are misleading – they talk about remuneration without any context.

“The vast majority of the figure quoted is pension contributions on leaving/retiring, on top of a partial salary for the months worked that year. You will see the annual salary for this post was in fact £155, 018 in the previous year 2016/17.”

Each council also stressed that the information on executive salaries is available publicly online.
